Listful Thinking: 27 Lessons I’d tell my daughter.

August 1, 2011

27 Lessons I’d tell my daughter.

  1. He may say he loves you, but if his actions don’t show it, run. Fast.
  2. Watch your chocolate intake.
  3. Play sports often. I suggest soccer or volleyball. They leave the best results even after you stop playing. (toned legs for years, trust me)
  4. Add Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Janelle Monáe to your music collection.
  5. Let me teach you how to drive a stick shift.
  6. You have to live in New York City for at least a summer.
  7. Be somewhat afraid to talk strangers, but not afraid to smile at them.
  8. Get in the habit of reading everything. Especially the New York Times and the books on their best sellers list. Don’t be scared to throw in some chick-lit too.
  9. Make sure all of your best friends don’t look like you.
  10. Consider attending a big instate school for college. Especially if it’s UNC. (Yes, mommy’s biased)
  11. Live your dreams into a reality.
  12. Absolutely no sex in my house. (even if that’s one of your dreams.)
  13. Don’t be scared to date the unconventional dude, but beware of an unstable personality.
  14. Consider a guy’s family as you consider his marriage potential.
  15. Don’t worry, I’ll teach you how to bodyroll.
  16. Do not SHAVE your vajay –vajay. A wax will hurt but it’s worth it in the end. (Details later)
  17. Your passport is your friend. Use it. It won’t be offended.
  18. Meet as many people as you can, with varying ideas from your own. God gave you the entire world, including the people in it. Explore His power and embrace it.
  19. Passing judgment is worse than passing gas. (well, sometimes)
  20. Find your way to TED (Technology Entertainment & Design) faster than I did. Even better, find a way to get on their main stage faster than I did.
  21. I’ll be your friend later in life – for now, I’m your mom and I mean it.
  22. Family always comes first.
  23. You must learn how to do your own hair. It’ll save you in college. At least learn how to do a simple wash and set.
  24. Your body is truly your temple. Take care of it now and it’ll be good to you later. You think that freshman 15 is something…just wait until the weight doesn’t come off like you tell it to. Even when you go a week just eating fruits and vegetables. Yeah…ouch. It hurts.
  25. Find the things that bring you joy and hold them dear. (Even if it is a McDonald’s small fry every now and then. Moderation is key)
  26. Trust in God more than anything I just told you.
  27. And finally Psalms 37:4, Proverbs 3:5-6 & Isaiah 40:28-31

What lesson would you share with your daughter? Tell us below. :)

    28. though it won’t make any sense at all and will go against every natural impulse sometimes its best to love from a distance.
    29. Big girls do cry
    30. love feels good more than it feels bad

Looking forward to the lessons you’ll pass on to your son. Or even your daughter’s husband.

I will share this list with my daughter. She is too young now and I don’t want to have the talk about pubic hair yet. I want add something, make sure you hold your sisterfriends dear to your heart. Never let anything interfere with those relationships.
